Bei der Präsentation dieser Daten auf der Tagung „Deutsche Sprachwissenschaft in Italien“ 2008 in Rom reagierte ein Kollege neben mir schnell normativ: „Es heißt doch …“ Vielleicht hätte er nicht Linguist werden sollen. Die normative Reaktion ist Ausdruck einer Überzeugung und von Hilflosigkeit. Was steckt hinter einem solchen Bild? Als Grammatiker vermuten wir erst mal, dass es eine differenziertere Regel gibt. Das ist forschungsstrategisch vernünftig. Unser Ziel wäre, für jeden der belegten Fälle Merkmale zu finden, die ihn als Instanz einer homogenen Regel bestimmen könnten.

Hypothesen können auf jeder der drei Ebenen formuliert werden, aber wie genau sich diese Hypothesen empirisch überprüfen lassen, hängt von der jeweiligen Ebene ab. Auf der unteren Ebene (Korpus) ist die Situation am einfachsten: Jede Hypothese lässt sich anhand des Korpus direkt und eindeutig verifizieren oder falsifizieren. Jede hier gefundene Erkenntnis bleibt wahr, solange das Korpus unverändert bleibt. Auf der mittleren Ebene („Sprache“) ist die Situation komplizierter: Hier würden Hypothesen anhand geeigneter anderer Korpora überprüft werden.
