A generic systems design process may have produced the relatively general-purpose h a r d w a r e and software that bespoke application builders use to develop a system for a specific organisational setting.

While this has led to significant advances in ease of use and ease of learning of computer systems, it leaves other critical issues out of the equation. T h e r e is considerable evidence to suggest that these other issues create major problems of implementation and acceptability, and they need to be m o r e formally addressed if these problems are to be avoided. These issues originate from the fact that most computer systems are used in an organisational setting w h e r e it is normal for people to share tasks, which m e a n s that the system has to support not individual users, but people who in some way divide activities between t h e m .
