It is also suitable for co-firing coal with low-grade fuels, including some waste materials. The direct injection of limestone into the bed offers the possibility of economic sulfur dioxide removal, as the coal sulfur is chemically combined with the sorbent and a solid by-product consisting of calcium sulfate dihydrate (gypsum), coal ash, and unreacted calcium oxide is produced. However, the presence of partly reacted sorbent results in high disposal costs for this type of combustion. The boiler design must take into account both the ash quantity and properties.

Ash is collected from four points in the plant: the fluidised bed, the superheater, the economiser and the bag-filter unit. 52 Bagasse Bagasse is a waste fuel produced from the extraction of sugar from cane. The cane stalks, (3–4 m long) are processed by chopping into 52 THE CURRENT AND FUTURE NATURE OF COMBUSTION ASHES short lengths and shredding to expose the soft inner fibres in which the sugars are held. 5 % ash. The ash in many bagasse samples is derived from the soil and other inorganic contaminants picked up during harvesting.

37 Coal and MSW (or RDF) Although it is impractical to burn unprocessed MSW in combustion systems designed to burn coal, this is probably not so for co-firing refusederived fuel (RDF) in coal-fired utility boilers. Because utility boilers are generally very large, typically consuming several hundreds of tonnes of coal per hour, large quantities of MSW can be fired while maintaining a relatively small fraction of the boiler fuel input. 38 39 The benefits of lower fuel costs and emissions by using MSW have to be weighed against the likely disadvantages of increased slagging, fouling, corrosion, erosion and trace element release.
