However, while participation should be voluntary, there are consistent reports that people who volunteer to participate are usually of a higher social class, are more intelligent, more extroverted, less conforming and have a higher need for approval. So ethical requirements for volunteering can act in direct opposition to the methodological requirements of the research design, where proper sampling techniques should be employed (Chapter 9) to obtain a representative subset of the population. However, the advancement of knowledge and the pursuit of information are not in themselves sufficient justifications for overriding ethical values and ignoring the interests of those studied and those who do not wish to be studied.

Thus field studies rather than laboratory studies dominate the qualitative approach. For example, qualitative research has made managers realize they must become more sensitive to individual needs and motivations of employees in order to have more productive and satisfied staff. Every consumer and employee carries around a kitbag of unique experiences, feelings, and beliefs which they bring to bear in research studies. As Epictitus declared in AD 1 ‘people are not disturbed by things but by the views which they take of them’.

The issue of rewarding participation Many participants are offered a small incentive to take part – a book voucher, a sample of company product, or even money. The incentive should never be something that would jeopardize the participant if they refused to take part, such as lower marks at university or removing the annual bonus. Research subjects should not be offered any form of inducement that is disproportionately large so that they are encouraged to act against their interests by taking part in the investigations.
