Among the artists who recorded at the Peabody in 1929 were Furry Lewis, Charlie McCoy, Walter Vincent (aka Vincson), Speckled Red, Robert Wilkins, Jenny Pope, Big Joe Williams, Jed Davenport, Garfield Akers, Jim Jackson, Joe Callicott, and Kid Bailey. Mississippi bluesman Eugene Powell, who recorded as Sonny Boy Nelson at the St. Charles Hotel in New Orleans in 1936, provides some insight into a process that was probably about the same at the Peabody, the King Edward in Jackson, or any of the other hotels that served as temporary recording studios: I remember we worked all night.

C. Handy’s home given by Mattie Sengstacke is probably the best deal in town. Mrs. Sengstacke is familiar not only with Handy’s life but also with Memphis history, the Civil Rights Movement, and the African American press, among other subjects. The house is tucked into the corner of the Beale Street Historic District, back a way from the street. It was moved to Beale from its original location at 659 Jennette Street, ten blocks to the south, which is where Handy actually lived while he was in Memphis— from about 1905, when he came here from Clarksdale, Mississippi, until 1918, when he moved to New York.
