Throughout the following chapters I encourage the reader not to think of rituals as either ‘‘sacriﬁce’’ or ‘‘not sacriﬁce’’ but rather to view some rituals as more or less sacriﬁcial than others. In so doing, we forgo the need to identify essential or deﬁning characteristics of sacriﬁce. Instead, we recognize a wide spectrum of ritual activity in which certain ritual events are more or less sacriﬁcial than others, depending upon several criteria.
