Why is this? What is it about certain events (and not others) that prompts us to think of them as sacrificial? ’’ It is a subtle shift but an important one. Throughout the following chapters I encourage the reader not to think of rituals as either ‘‘sacrifice’’ or ‘‘not sacrifice’’ but rather to view some rituals as more or less sacrificial than others. In so doing, we forgo the need to identify essential or defining characteristics of sacrifice. Instead, we recognize a wide spectrum of ritual activity in which certain ritual events are more or less sacrificial than others, depending upon several criteria.

An enclosure is constructed for the ifstf i rites. A second enclosure is constructed to the east of this for pa´subandha and soma sacrifices. A havirdh¯ana area is constructed within the eastern enclosure for use in soma sacrifices only. Three fires are situated within the ritual arena. The a¯ havan¯ıya fire is where the o√erings are presented. The g¯arhapatya fire is where the o√erings are prepared. The dakfsin¯agni fire is ritually relatively less important. It is used to prepare a meal for the ritual participants and to cook rice balls o√ered to the ancestors in one rite.

Smith, one of the most influential religious studies scholars of his generation. Smith has asserted the importance of comparison as an integral part of the scholarly enterprise: ‘‘Comparison, as seen from such a view, is an active, at times even a playful, enterprise of deconstruction and reconstitution which, kaleidoscope-like, gives the scholar a shifting set of characteristics with which to negotiate the relations between his or her theoretical interests and data stipulated as exemplary.
