These blends are produced by dynamic vulcanization of large proportions of rubber in situ during the mixing step with thermoplastic melt in the presence of extender oil. For example, EPDM and polypropylene are compounded with high boiling paraffinic oil and a phenolic curative to form a typical TPV. The oil swells the crosslinked rubber and is also miscible with the polypropylene. At the end of the dynamic vulcanization process, polypropylene forms the continuous matrix and the crosslinked rubber becomes the discrete phase even when the rubber to PP ratio is greater than one [4].

Mechanical problems that can develop because of a poorly dispersed pigment include; film tears, stretching, poor physical strength of film and reduction in impact resistance. These dispersion problems result in product rejection for film manufacturers that leads to lost productivity and claims.
